WHEELING-WV: The Continental Football League (CoFL) today announced the appointment of Mike Kelly as Commissioner of the newly re-established league. A former college quarterback and coach with more than 45 years of experience spanning the NCAA, CFL, NFL, XFL, and player representation, Kelly brings a rare depth of expertise to guide the CoFL into its newest era.

Kelly’s career has covered every dimension of the game—on the field, in the front office, and in the classroom. His work as an offensive innovator and personnel executive has included roles with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Orlando Rage of the original XFL, and multiple collegiate programs including Valdosta State and Widener University. His leadership experience extends beyond football into education, broadcasting, and player representation, underscoring his wide-ranging impact on the sport at every level.

“Football has always been about more than stadium lights and Sunday television—it’s about communities, opportunity, and building a bridge for athletes who have been overlooked,” said Kelly. “The Continental Football League was a bold idea when it first launched decades ago, and this reintroduction will honor that spirit while delivering a new pathway for players, coaches, and fans across the country. We intend to reach the communities the NFL doesn’t touch and develop the kind of athletes who can thrive at the next level.”

The COFL, originally active in the 1960s and 1970s, is being reintroduced as a modern, community-centric, fan-owned league that will serve as a developmental platform for the NFL. The league will launch with eight teams across the United States, providing affordable, high-quality football rooted in local pride and regional identity.
